Hope and Healing After Abortion
Jane Fonda who was sexually abused as a child says that is the reason she is such an advocate for womens rights, but I think it goes even deeper than that. I have always felt compassion for her although we hold very different views on most things.
Despite the limelight and success, she had a difficult life. Her father, Henry Fonda, cheated on her mother who had nine abortions before Jane was born. Speaking on her mothers abortions she said, “”‘The minute that I read that, everything fell into place,’ she said. ‘I knew [the reason for] the promiscuity, the endless plastic surgery, the guilt, the inability to love or be intimate, and I was able to forgive her and forgive myself.”
When she was 12 her mother comitted suicide. Jane blamed it on herself feeling she did something wrong. They blamed it on bi polar but anyone who knows the impact of abortion would be able to understand how Janes mother Frances Seymour could be driven to total despair. When you think about those times I am sure she probably kept her suffering to herself and of course the abortions were illegal. Imagine being allowed to live and finding out 9 of your siblings were killed. What an impossible expectation to live up to. I am sure she felt more than once like she needed to justify her existance.
Lets face it, when looking at abortion you go one way or the other.
I often feel in the pro life movement we miss countless opportunites to convert souls. We can be quick to condem anyone who supports abortion without looking at the reasons they feel the way they do. Instead of offering understanding (without condoning abortion) we are quick to judge making it impossible for people to hear anything we are saying and leaving them feeling judged and unheard.
Our world is wounded from abortion and these wounds manifest themselves in countless ways leaving a generational impact with many people not even realizing why.
We need to recognize that every person has value and dignity in the eyes of God and no matter what the sin, He desires healing.
Jane Fonda is up there in age now and battling cancer. I pray she somehow finds the help she needs to heal from the deep wounds of her mothers abortions and her suicide as well as her own abuse. Jane Fonda needs love not condemnation. I pray she finds the love of God that heals…
